INFANT MORTALITY

Infant mortality refers to the deaths of persons aged under twelve months. A high degree of caution should be exercised in regard to interpreting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infant deaths data. In addition to the data quality issues that impact on Indigenous deaths data generally, data on infant mortality by Indigenous status is subject to the high variability caused by small numbers. Infant mortality counts have been aggregated for the period of 2008-2012 to add robustness to otherwise small counts. See Explanatory Notes 68-76 for further information.

For 2008-2012, the infant mortality rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians was higher than that of non-Indigenous Australians (6.4 per 1,000 compared with 3.7 per 1,000). Of the 504 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander infant deaths registered from 2008-2012, just under half (47.8%, 241 deaths) were attributed to Certain conditions originating in the perinatal period (P00-P96).
